Ntambang Community Leaders, Women, Youths Receive Training on FGM, GBV, Harmful Practices!

Some Religious Leaders, Councillors, parents and youths at the Ntambang neighborhood in Bamenda II have received trainings on Sexual Reproduction Health (SRH) issues like Toxic Masculinity, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Gender Based Violence (GBV), among others. These are part of activities under the “Adjust For Me” Project under execution in some Four (4) Local Council Areas in Bamenda. The series of campaigns carried out by Community Spokespersons assigned by Common Action for Gender Development (COMAGEND) in the Ntambag neighbourhood are geared towards encouraging open conversations about sex Education, body autonomy and discouraging excessive dowries that objectify girls.

The sessions held at Council Halls, Mosques and at door to door levels provided a platform for Community spokespersons to interact with participants on a one on one bases to discuss SRHR issues. One of such sessions was very impactful to Bashira Bintu,

"This is a beautiful opportunity for youths like myself to understand a lot of things as far as our SRH needs are concerned. I would like to suggest that COMAGEND through “Adjust For Me” creates more opportunities to empower women through training workshops like tailoring, Hairdressing, production of beeds. They can also help sponsor girls and women who are interested in Education but cannot afford it”.

The team equally visited and held talks with women during their Friday Prayers at the Mosque where discussions centred around Harmful traditional Practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and how to eradicate them.

Eucharia, a mile 3 Nkwen resident says she has gathered enough knowledge through different sessions that would help shape her perspective on SRH issues. She hopes to extend this knowledge to members of her community as well.

“I’ve learned a lot during these trainings especially the consequences of Female Genital Mutilation and it’s consequences on women and girls. FGM violates women’s sexual rights and some women even bleed to death after the process. I promise to share this knowledge and educate my immediate family, friends, and community about the dangers of FGM not just to the girl but to the society at large”

Door to door sensitization on Gender Equality/Life Skills, interactive Community Sensitization about GBV, Toxic Masculinity and SRH were also part of activities carried out by community spokesperson for the “Adjust For Me” project.

Funded by Amplify Change, and implemented by COMAGEND, the  “Adjust For Me” Project targets SRH issues like GBV, Toxic Masculinity and barriers to accessing SRH services. It is implemented in some 4 selected Local Communities within Bamenda.
