​Commissioner for Economic Development champions Back to School course; donates to Ex Fighters!

The Commissioner for Economic Development at the North West Regional Assembly (NWRA), Hon Ghejung Awunti has supported Ex Fighters in the North West Region with Didatic materials and food items.

Speaking Sunday at the permanent site of the Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Center in Bafut, the Commissioner assured Ex Fighters of his commitment through the NWRA to ensure effective Back to School for the 2023/2024 Academic year in the North West Region. 

“Education remains one of the most basic and important fundamental right of all children and we are determined to secure a good future for you all by accompanying you in your academic journey with these basic needs”

School bags, books, dresses and other didactic materials, assorted food items, hygiene and sanitation supplies were offered to ex fighters by the Commissioner and delegation in an event that witnessed the presence of the over 400 ex fighters lodged at the centre.



“I hope that the visit of Hon Ghejung Awunti would motivate and cause other institutions and elites of the Region to extend a hand of fellowship to these ex combatants especially during this back to school period. They are our children and need support in one way or the other”

It was an occasion for the Honourable Commissioner and delegation to commune with ex fighters and vice versa. During the visit, ex fighters thanked the Commissioner and expressed need for their complete reintegration into the society. According to them, it is only by so doing that they can effectively showcase and make use of different skills acquired in the center.

The DDR welcomed a new ex fighter who had recently dropped his arms in Tubah Sub Division and was brought in Sunday by the Divisional Officer of Tubah, Masango Metouge. An opportunity which the Coordinator, Kum Henri used to call on other fighters still lagging behind to drop their weapons and join the DDR Center.

The Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Center was created by Government to ensure the rehabilitation and reintegration of Ex fighters in the restive North West and South West Regions of the Country. 


Since it’s creation 5 years ago, the Center has effectively Reintegrated a good number of ex fighters who have so far received trainings in tailoring, hairdressing, woodwork, among others. Ex fighters who showed interest in Education were enrolled and some recently succeeded in the last GCE Ordinary and Advanced Levels examination.
