The foundation stone for an Ultra modern Customs office for the North West Region has been laid.

Presiding at the event which coincided with the 71st edition of the International Customs Day in Bamenda, H.E Louis Paul Motaze, Minister of Finance expressed satisfaction at the successes recorded by the Customs sector amid the Crises. He believes the customs sector will do better and improve the living conditions of the population with the construction of an office in Bamenda.

“I am very happy with my people of the Customs Department because they are resilient. Inspite of the challenges, they still managed to perform well and have delivered way above the target I gave them. They have worked well and need to be encouraged. Hence the construction  of this ultra modern office which is intended to facilitate work in the sector”

The Director General of Customs, Edwin Fongod on his part revealed that a good number of Projects shall be implemented in the Region such as the creation and management of a Dry Port and Clearing Post in Bamenda. These services according to the Director will increase revenue collection in the Region as well as facilitate the clearing of goods.

The North West Chief of Customs, Epie Jerome believes the new office will fast track the Modernization of Customs Administration and also create an enabling working environment for staff.

Epie Jerome went further to say the Customs Sector as at 2023 realized a Budgetary and non Budgetary Revenue of over 500 Million CFA FRS, as opposed to an Annual Revenue of 6 Million CFA FRS in 2019. This to him is an indication that the Customs Department can do better in an enabling environment which happens to be the new office.

The event was an opportunity for the Customs Chief to express some challenges faced such as insecurity, especially in the suburbs where Custom Officials are either kidnapped, robbed or molested by Separatists. He hopes the Ministers visit and construction of the Customs office will address some of these challenges.
